Title: We are not all friends but that’s ok: Building positive relationships in early childhood.

Abstract:
Brain research tells us that secure positive relationships are crucial for young children’s learning and development (Michael C. Nagel, 2012).

But what do such relationships look like in an early childhood setting? Is it just about being “friends” with everyone or is there more to it? Are there other ways to view positive relationships beyond friendships and sharing?

This workshop presents a framework to assist early childhood practitioners, across all settings, to reflect, and build, on the practical ways in which they support positive relationships with, and between, young children.

Title: On the road to meaningful learning environments

Abstract:
What messages do our learning environments convey?
How can engaging play spaces be established?
Does the environment suggest that this is a place for children to play?
Do children have a voice?
Is the environment flexible and invites participation by every child?

This workshop aims to examine these questions and others when designing or reviewing a learning environment that affords opportunities for children to have their voices heard and respected.

Suggestions for promoting their sustained thinking and engagement alongside wonder, inquiry and investigation will be shared.

Title: Literacy is more than teaching ABC

Abstract:
Literacy is a highly valued form of knowledge in our education system. Many teachers and educators teach literacy by breaking down literacy skills into small units of knowledge that can be taught through repetition and drill. An alternative is to view literacy as a meaning making process that connects children with knowledge, skills and dispositions that inspire them to communicate through text and print.

This workshop presents a range of practical strategies for teaching children to read and write using their own interests and relationships with others.

Title: Sustainability: Connecting with the land through music and dance.

Abstract: ‘Beneath the concrete, beneath the street, beneath the houses and the places people meet.
There is the soil, the clay, there is the sand, Beneath the cities and the towns, there is the land.’

This interactive music workshop will explore traditional and original songs and dances of the land and its creatures. As children spend more time indoors, they can be disconnected from the source of their food and necessities, and the cycle of natural life.

We will introduce :
· Ways to encourage and develop positive connections to the earth and a desire to look after the land in which we live.
· Understanding of the sources of our food.
· Ways to imbed indigenous perspectives into the early years curriculum
· All of these will be introduced through the medium of songs and dances.
